Aftermarket go-fast goodies for the new Ford Mustang are coming as fast as shots at a frat party. Intake and exhaust systems, stiffer suspension bits, body armor--you name it. A fresh Mustang to market also means a Saleen-modified version isn't far behind. The company is quick to remind you that it isn't an aftermarket "tuner," but a specialty vehicle manufacturer. The physical reality is that Ford provides Saleen with production Mustangs, a bunch of factory parts are taken off, a bunch of Saleen-produced or sourced parts are bolted on, and the car is sold/certified/warranted as such. The roster will include naturally aspirated (S281) and supercharged (S281 SC) models, plus an S281E (for Extreme) version currently under development.


Saleen knows its customers like lots of scoops and gills--functional or otherwise--so the front and rear fascias get a complete makeover. The rocker panels are new, and plastic escutcheons adorn the rear quarter windows. The GT's 4.6-liter V-8 remains internally stock; mods include underdrive accessory pulleys, a remapped engine-management computer (which now requires unleaded premium fuel), and a free-flow air filter element. Particularly interesting is the stainless-steel exhaust system, which employs twin mufflers and a vacuum-actuated bypass valve. The latter opens at a specified pressure, looping some of the exhaust through the less restrictive mufflers and short tailpipes. The goals are increased low-end torque and a seriously rumbling sound that can still pass the government's drive-by noise exam. It works, in spades.


Suspension upgrades include new anti-roll bars, firmer struts/shocks, and revised spring rates. Our car was further equipped with the optional 14-inch front brake rotors. Inside, you'll find Saleen sport seats and a modified gauge package, aluminum trimmed pedals, and a short-throw shifter. Vehicle weight is up approximately 50 pounds.
